We break down the hidden costs of boat ownership.

The Real Cost of Owning a Boat in NSW in 2025–26  - A breakdown of annual expenses for a $40,000 trailered boat

Buying a boat is exciting, but the purchase price is only the start. Here’s what it actually costs to keep a typical 5–6 m aluminium or fibreglass trailer-sailer on the water in New South Wales each year (2025–26 figures, Sydney/central coast region).

| Category | Annual Cost | Notes & Sources |
|---------|-------------|-----------------|
| **Vessel registration** | $188 – $420 | NSW Maritime personal vessel rego (class 1, <5.5 m = $188; 5.5–7.5 m = $420). 1-year rego, private use. |
| **Trailer registration** | $189 | Light trailer <4.5 t GVM, 12 months (Service NSW 2025 fee). |
| **Boat & trailer insurance** | $650 – $1,200 | Agreed value $40 k, $500 excess, third-party + theft/fire. Average $850 for most owners (quotes from Nautilus, Club Marine, Allianz). |
| **Routine maintenance – boat** | $1,200 – $2,500 | Annual service (outboard 100 hr), antifoul, anodes, impeller, belts, polish/Detail. $1,800 average for 150–200 hp 4-stroke. |
| **Routine maintenance – trailer** | $250 – $450 | Bearings, brakes (if fitted), jockey wheel, winch service, new tyres every 4–5 yrs. |
| **Hidden/occasional maintenance** | $800 – $2,000 | Prop dings ($300), lower-unit oil seal ($600), electronics failure, canvas/clears, unexpected corrosion repairs. Budget 2–5 % of boat value per year. |
| **Fuel** | $1,500 – $3,000 | 200 L/100 hr season @ $2.20/L 98-octane = $2,200 average (Bar Crusher / Quintrex owners report 1–1.5 L/nm). |
| **Boat loan – interest & repayments** | $0 (if paid off) <br>or **$10,800** (if still on 2-year loan) | $40 k @ 8.99 % p.a. marine finance (Wisr/Stratton 2025 rate), 24-month term = $1,800/mth × 12 = $21,600 total repayments year 1, of which ~$10,800 is interest + fees in the first 12 months. |
| **Mooring / storage / ramp fees** | $400 – $3,500 | Private swing mooring $1,200–$2,200, hardstand $1,800, or just ramp permits $120 + occasional private ramp $30/launch. |
| **Safety gear & licensing** | $250 | Boat licence renewal every 5 yrs ($200 prorated), flare replacement, new life jackets, EPIRB battery. |

### Total realistic annual cost (mid-range scenario)

| Scenario | Yearly total |
|----------|--------------|
| **Paid-off boat, 150 hrs use, swing mooring** | **$6,800 – $8,500** |
| **Still repaying 2-year loan (year 1)** | **$17,000 – $19,000** |
| **High-use (300 hrs), marina berth, full covers** | **$12,000 – $15,000** |

Quick cost-saving tips for NSW owners

Register vessel + trailer together online and save the $35 counter fee.
Do your own antifoul and minor trailer work – saves $800–$1,200/yr.
Shop insurance every year; switching can cut $300–$400.
Use 91 RON with stabilizer instead of 98 – saves ~$400/season if your outboard allows it.
Pay the boat off in 12–18 months instead of 24; you’ll slash total interest from ~$3,200 to ~$1,800.

Bottom line: Budget **$7,000–$9,000** per year once the boat is paid off, or **$18,000+** in the first two years if you finance. That’s before you even add fishing gear, bait, or the obligatory post-trip beers.

Safe boating!
